Operational Context

Lesvos Solidarity (LeSol) is a grassroots organisation based on Lesvos Island, Greece. LeSol has been operating since 2012. LeSol is an assembly-run organisation and the participation of refugees in shaping knowledge and skills is vital for integration and social inclusion.

Overview of Project and Position

Typically reporting to the Communications Focal Point, the Communications Officer is responsible for creating communications content on behalf of Lesvos Solidarity. He/ She is part of a team providing strategic relations and communication services to internal and external stakeholders. Delivering sound advice, strategy, planning and implementation on various communication matters is core to the role.

Key objectives / responsibilities of the role*
  • Maintain organisation-wide media and communications plan for social media
  • Drafting of content for a variety of communications outputs of the organisation (i.e. website, newsletter,
    reports, presentations)
  • Writing of content for a variety of communications outputs of the organisation (i.e. website, newsletter, reports, presentations)
  • Post social media updates (needs to be specific for norm and emergency situations)
  • Respond to external inquiries (max. after 48 hours of incoming communication) and follow-ups as required.
  • Respond to internal inquiries (max. after 48 hours of incoming communication, except for requests marked as urgent) and follow-ups as required.
  • Engage with people on social media channels.
  • Support in organizing and planning networking events - attending events when required, and acting as a
    spokesperson.
  • Lead the creative outputs of the department.
  • Collate and adjust LeSol media kit.
  • Update LeSol website.
  • Facilitate/contribute to other departments' external media/comms content.
  • Speak at LeSol’s events (according to subject and expertise).
  • Represent department / project internally in cross-departmental bodies and meetings (in absence of a
    coordinator).
  • Present- along with Advocacy expert departmental /project status updates in organisation-wide status-update meetings (in absence of a coordinator).
  • Contribute to the writing of Standard Operating Procedures for all processes related to Comms and Advocacy.
  • Follow ISO procedures.
  • Work closely with the Fundraising department for proposal writing (assisting with media material) and reporting for the same reason.
  • Assist with the induction process of volunteers for the department.
Required degree/experience
  • 2+ years prior experience in a communications or marketing role
  • Fluency in Greek and English
  • Exceptional writing skills and ability to compose engaging and accurate content
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office programs
  • Knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator is an asset
Required qualities
  • Strong writing and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with the best practices of common social media platforms
  • Knowledge of best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts
  • Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team
  • Open to different cultures, social backgrounds and ideas
  • Ability to work in an unstable and changing environment

Lesvos Solidarity is an organisation registered with the Ministry of Asylum and Migration and has ISO quality management procedures. This requires comprehensive reporting of quantitative and qualitative data and information.

In addition, the organisation works collaboratively across departments. This requires team members to support each other in their tasks to meet additional needs from time to time. All team members are also asked to actively participate in events, seminars, workshops, and discussions related to both their role and the work of the organisation.

Success Factors

The successful Comms Officer will have had previous experience working in a similar role. He/she will focus on results, communicate effectively, work collaboratively and take ownership of his/her work by being proactive and owning Lesvos Solidarity strategic vision and mission. LeSol team members are expected to support all efforts towards accountability and transparency to its beneficiaries and their team. The successful everyday operation of the Communications Department and the smooth coordination with other units constitute the major success factor.
